The Brine Garden--Duncan & Julia Brine
Pawling, NY
Meadow, Dry/xeriscape, Substantial native plants, Woodland/shade garden, Organic/toxin-free, Scenic view, Water feature
This naturalistic, six-acre, garden connects diverse topographical areas of a former dairy farm. The garden has an ecological approach; however, it's not purist. Mature native communities of shrubs and trees combine with select non-native plants. Meandering paths join off-site and on-site views. Duncan Brine and his wife and partner, Julia, are the principal landscape designers at GardenLarge. He's an instructor of naturalistic landscape design at the New York Botanical Garden. Anne Raver, in The New York Times, wrote that the Brine Garden is "a dreamlike landscape." In 2010, on the occasion of the garden's 20th anniversary, Doug Tallamy and his wife visited the Brines. Thomas Christopher recently interviewed Duncan on his podcast, Growing Greener. The garden is published in an array of books and magazines, including Private Gardens of the Hudson Valley and Gardens of the Hudson Valley. Open Day visitors receive a whole property plant list of 178 species. See www.gardenlarge.com for more.
