Sculpturedale
Kent, CT
Garden structure/sculpture, Organic/toxin-free, Substantial native plants, Water feature, Woodland/shade garden
Sculpturedale is a garden of 4 acres surrounding a house built in 1776 with barns and outbuildings. After the usual brambles had been cleared in successive years starting in 1993, the land indicated what would best suit its various natural areas: sun, shade, wet, dry, hilly, rocky, etc. Each area has been planted around existing features of walls, stumps, banks, buildings, rocks, marsh, woods, pond, lawn. Originally designed to showcase sculpture made here, the garden has developed distinct interest in its own right, where a large variety of perennials, shrubs, and trees are planted to enjoy in all seasons. No deer fencing and no irrigation mean natives and organics rule. All work is done by the owners. Visitors are invited to walk the paths established throughout, to enjoy the life-size steel sculpture, and to visit the studio where the art is constructed. Among many areas to enjoy are the primrose path, woodland walk, fern ramble, pollinator patch, wetland wander, conifer corner, shade bank, sun border, Carter Creek, and Fiji Island. In the later summer garden there is angelica, clethra, ligularia, hydrangea, cardinal flower, kirengeshoma, nicotiana, and many more highlights of unusual plants. A very unique treehouse is not to be missed.
This garden's estimated size is 4 acres.
