Rumford Hall
Brewster, NY
Alpine/rock garden, Garden structure/sculpture, Fruit/vegetables, Rare plants/plant collection, Substantial native plants, Woodland/shade garden
Rumford Hall is a 15-acre property with mature plantings and monumental boulders in the foothills of the Appalachians. A stone table near the foxgloves is engraved with the date of the house, 1879, and a smokehouse huddles under greenery in a courtyard garden with an old, weathered door. We have boxwood and roses, a plum allée, weepery, pergolas, orchard, vegetable garden, fernery, and a pool garden with succulents and grasses. Fences are lined with ninebark, honeysuckle, and tapestry hedges. The ruins on the hill are adjacent to a woodland garden enclosed by stone walls. Visitors are encouraged to follow the trails that we have signposted in the hills; the forest has a footbridge and a mountain upholstered in moss.
This garden's estimated size is 15 acres (including woodland trails).
