The Hen & the Hive
North Salem, NY
Meadow, Water feature
Celebrating 21 years of gardening at Hen and the Hive, we continue to blend open perennial beds, wildflower meadows, woodlands, and paths, while deer-fencing only vegetables, berries, and a more formal flower garden. With the majority of our property unfenced, we try to take advantage of interspersing deer-resistant mostly native plantings and an effective spraying regimen. This strategy has been successful and allowed us to cultivate various garden spots throughout the property that incorporate seating areas, stone, and even a bit of water. Each year has brought new ideas for new areas to enjoy throughout the growing season and beyond. The recent addition of a greenhouse has expanded possibilities and given us a chance to learn new things and extend the growing season in challenging new ways. A major focus over the past five years or more has been to eliminate as many non-native invasive species as possible and find the treasures that have been struggling to shine for years.
