Gribble-Cooke Garden

Our garden began when Catharine designed our home, built in 2001, on fifteen acres. About 3–4 acres are gardened. With all gardens, it is an ongoing process of growth, change, mistakes and rearranging. As we get older, we are transitioning to more shrubs and specimen trees. As you come up the drive there is a south facing meadow (designed by Mother Nature, encouraged and edited by us), and to your right is the start of a Rhododendron Dell.

Behind the house is a formal crescent garden hedged with trimmed linden trees, and rock gardens are up the hill to the west. Vegetable gardens lead to a pea gravel dining area with a pergola and fire pit. Beyond there and years ago, Ian created a grass amphitheater and a sunken spiral garden with no-mow grass which finishes off the northern boundary.

Behind the “stage” we are trialing some new cultivars of hydrangeas - as professionals, we need to know if the hype is real! Plenty of sitting areas with long views offer restful contemplation or, after a long day of gardening, the outdoor bathtub nestled in the rockery is a joy!
