Versailles on Hudson
Hudson, NY
Water feature, Garden structure/sculpture, Organic/toxin-free, Scenic view
We wanted to create a garden that looked as if it had been planted when the house was built, in 1901. The entire land formation presented a real challenge; from the house to the bottom of the garden was a steep 30-foot drop. We needed to create an elegant way to move through the garden, so we carefully designed multi-level stone patios and easy-access stairways to guide you down to the fountain. We chose a most unexpected plan that would take advantage of the dramatic views of the river, hills, and sunsets. By turning the garden on its axis, we created the illusion of a massive property with grand, sweeping lawns; long, flowing hydrangea and hornbeam hedges; and architectural boxwood balls. Our fountain and the hornbeam curve are the highlights of this quiet garden, complete with fish, frogs, and water plants. In the spring and early summer, the garden is predominately green and white, and it turns ever more pink as the summer progresses. In the winter, this garden makes an equally strong statement due to its framing by many evergreens. Versailles on Hudson offers ever-changing vistas as you walk around the property. From the upper and lower patios, the grand porch, the four staircases, to the long lawns and the bubbling fountain, this special garden always delights and soothes the soul.
This garden's estimated size is ½ acre.
