Ketay Garden
Claverack, NY
Meadow, Garden structure/sculpture, Organic/toxin-free, Scenic view, Woodland/shade garden
An allée of large maples and oak, bordered by meadows on either side, forms the entrance to the gardens which surround the house. A large garden in front of the house and a smaller one behind lead down to a meadow in the distance framed by views of the Catskill Mountains. The front garden is bordered by a semicircle of forsythia that shields the garden from the road. A circular iron bench surrounds an oak tree and is a great place to sit in spring when the irises and redbud are in bloom. The garden behind the house has a large pergola off the house, which is covered with yellow trumpet vine and looks over the garden and meadow beyond. From this garden, a curving mown path leads down the hill, through the meadow, and then along the side of the property bordered by our homage to Tuscany: a line of tall, narrow Irish juniper, which can, when you squint, look like a row of cypress. In the distance are the barn and the Catskill Mountains. A smaller rustic pergola is set away from the house with a stone terrace to the side. Two Adirondack chairs sit there for anyone who wishes to watch the sunset or just enjoy the breeze on the meadow. The walled bocce court, with its row of Adirondack chairs added not long ago, has become a favorite late afternoon gathering spot.
This garden's estimated size is 9 acres.
