The Garden at the Corner of Dock and Dock
Vashon Island, WA
Fruit/vegetables, Garden structure/sculpture, Organic/toxin-free, Scenic view, Substantial native plants, Water feature
One hundred years ago, this lot was under the vast industrial wharf of a large shipyard. For the past few years, Sylvie and Todd have created a multifaceted waterfront oasis framed by towering redwood, sycamore, and palm. (Yes, palm trees in the Pacific NW!) The beach-facing lower yard and firepit are encircled by saltwater friendlies and Northwest natives. Large beds of azalea, rhododendron, maple, and dwarf pine and more weave to the upper garden. The hops-covered bench and green-canopied gazebo (the "Belvedere") provide comfortable vantage points for resting, conversation, and meals. The semicircle, short-cropped lawn for games tops the colorful landscape that's bejeweled with sculptures, carvings, and mosaics. Beyond the main house, past the lilacs and lavender, is the orchard with apple, pear, plum, and persimmon.
This garden's estimated size is 1 acre.
