The Dancer
Birmingham, AL
Garden structure/sculpture, Water feature
Tucked on the down slope of Red Mountain in Birmingham, Alabama, this 1930s Tudor style home went through a major interior renovation and addition, providing these clients the opportunity to create the garden they dreamed of off the back of their house. The dream was not specific but in it was water, a ballerina, and roses. The space is about 2,100 square feet (35' × 60') and framed by the garage court and garage, existing magnolia hedge, the new kitchen addition, and a neighbor that needed screening. By using the house geometry and centerlines to pull the architecture into the garden, two garden rooms were created. The Fountain Garden is centered on the new kitchen steel-framed glass doors. Adjacent to the Fountain Garden is The Rose/Sculpture Garden, centered on the living room. A display terrace for the 8 foot tall bronze ballerina sculpture is surrounded by four Winter King Hawthorns as she overlooks the rose garden beyond.
This garden's estimated size is 2,100 sq. feet.
