Louise Wrinkle's Southern Woodland Garden
Birmingham, AL
Approximately 35 years ago Louise and John Wrinkle moved into the Beechwood Road house built by her parents in 1938 and where she grew up. To make this 2+ acres of mixed woodland her own, Louise worked with landscape designer Norman Kent Johnson to create accessibility to all areas by a network of paths and added small stone walls where necessary. Her horticultural interests began with natives, but a realization of Asian counterparts has enriched the plantings, which include family collections of hollies, azaleas, and ranunculus. Through the years the trees have grown to enormous size and new projects have unfolded, the latest of which are a pond in the lower corner and a pit greenhouse at the rear of the cutting garden. A variety of garden areas await the visitor: a sunken boxwood parterre, a Belgian fence of native crabapple, a cutting garden, and a natural brook which flows year-round.
