Shade Haven - Susan & Steve King
Roslyn Harbor, NY
Towering oak trees provide the canopy for our 1-acre shade garden. Enter through a wrought-iron arbor and stroll through a series of garden rooms passing borders of rhododendrons, skimmia, and cherry laurels. Nearby is a pond with a stream and waterfalls where koi and goldfish are eagerly awaiting their afternoon snack. Stacked stone walls surround shade-loving perennials, coral bark maples, and many species of hydrangeas. Follow a serpentine path to enter a woodland garden; beaded totem poles lead to a secluded area of contemplation. Pass by the colorful garden cottage with its stained glass window and walk through the arbors planted with clematis to arrive at the two-level brick patio that is bordered by lushly planted cobalt blue containers. Visit the greenhouse filled with a wide variety of succulents. Within view are formal boxwood gardens and sweetly scented clerodendrum. These gardens have been designed, built, and maintained by the owners and their three sons over the last fifteen years.
This garden's estimated size is 1 acre.
