Laura and Matt have developed their half-acre parcel for the last 30 years. Their home is a modified Mid-century Modern precast concrete prototype—a product of an optimistic building boom in the 1940s. That's when the enormous Whitemarsh Hall built by financier Edward T. Stotesbury began to be dismantled after his death. The Axels' land cascades downhill over 30 feet and so the development of exceptional gardens required thoughtful and finessed terracing and pathways. Laura has gathered her botanical exotica from her personal connections that have charmed the region's horticultural educators, curators, writers, and designers. The gardens are dynamic with surprises quietly tucked behind the robust specimens on display.
This garden's estimated size is ½ acre.
