Garden of Helen Bodian
Millerton, NY
Water feature, Meadow, Alpine/rock garden, Fruit/vegetables, Rare plants/plant collection
Over the years, this garden has developed into a landscape for strolling and leisurely observation, having accumulated a series of paths and trails that lead to and around various features, both natural and planted, each arising as a new area developed. There are four enclosed planted areas, each a distinct garden in itself, and each a consequence of three decades of collecting plants, experimenting with style, and balancing wild with cultivated. Simply listed, they include a square perennial garden, a long rock garden, a walled gravel garden, and a former vegetable garden now turning into something we can’t quite name. There are other planted areas that aren’t delineated or enclosed, but nevertheless worth notice. And now in progress, at the edge of a woods and next to a stream, we are making a fernery with a circular seating pattern.
