Bellsflower Garden
Stockton, NJ
Bellsflower is a garden of flowers from spring through fall. In 1995, the year following our purchase of the farm, I started garden beds with little knowledge and lots of enthusiasm. Plants were chosen for color and size and often just because they caught an eye at the garden center. Knowledge came with time. Plants that survived and thrived began to shape the garden. Phlox subulata covers large swaths and hangs over stone walls. The pink and yellow of early catmint and alyssum signal spring. Irises, roses, and a succession of Hydrangea arborescens, H. paniculata, and H. macrophylla follow. July and August find crape myrtle and summer phlox in pink, blue, white, and coral. Come September the asters begin, and the final chapter is all about blue, with tall roses adding their exclamation points and grasses flowing in the breeze. Flowering shrubs and specimen trees bloom from March through September. As the leaves color and fall, the bright holly berries herald winter, when they feed robins as the snow flies.
