Walford
West Stockbridge, MA
Alpine/rock garden, Fruit/vegetables, Garden structure/sculpture, Meadow, Organic/toxin-free
We named our garden Walford because of our admiration for and strong attachment to our street, West Alford Road. Our land consists of 6 acres, most of which is meadow. The property was somewhat barren and, we were told, was initially a gravel pit. There were hidden gems mixed in the surrounding woods along with beautiful species of trees that we cultivated, transplanted, and nurtured. We started with a small perennial garden around the house which evolved to multiple beds, a greenhouse, and a meadow full of wildflowers, milkweed, and of course, butterflies. Some of the beds have specific themes such as catmint and Russian sage—the purple theme. Another with hydrangea and sedum with a popup of poppies to add striking colors. Also, a bed with elderberry, fringe, and cherry trees mixed with mini asters, delphinium, cosmos, roses, and several other interesting plants. There are two huge beds of echinacea which add to our beautiful palette of purples, pinks, white, and multiple shades of green with something flowering every minute throughout the season.
This garden's estimated size is 3 acres.
