The Abascal Family Garden
Altadena, CA
Fruit/vegetables, Organic/toxin-free, Rare plants/plant collection, Scenic view, Water feature
Upon entering the Abascal Garden under an allée of white crape myrtles, you feel as though you've been transported someplace else. With the help of the supremely talented landscape architect Sally Farnum, the Abascals created a Mediterranean-inspired garden that is a delight to the senses. The garden has all the hallmarks of a classic Mediterranean garden such as shady retreats, multiple seating areas, terra-cotta pots, boxwood topiaries, citrus and olive trees, water features, blurred lines between the house and garden, and of course, gravel. The gravel was added over the years not just for aesthetic purposes, but for water conservation as well. Much of the water-thirsty lawn and water-impermeable asphalt surfacing was replaced with gravel. In designing a recent house renovation, careful consideration was given to how the garden would be experienced from inside the house, which is why you have beautiful vistas of the garden and the restful sound of a trickling fountain from nearly every room in the house. An added bonus to the property is a bonsai collection cultivated by Manuel and a gorgeous view of the San Gabriel Mountains!
This garden's estimated size is ½ acre.
