New England in San Francisco
San Francisco, CA
Garden structure/sculpture, Water feature, Woodland/shade garden
Our home is one of the few wood-shingled, colonial cape style residences in a historical neighborhood of Mediterranean and Tudor stucco designs. Coming from the East Coast, we were immediately drawn to the house- and tree-lined streets of the neighborhood. The backyard was a blank slate. We engaged landscape architect Kate Stickley of Arterra, with two requests: make it feel like we are in New England, and incorporate an ellipse in the design. She accomplished both splendidly. Since it's a small space, most of the area is covered with an elliptical terrace of blue stone, surrounded with trees and shrubs usually found along the Atlantic, rather than the Pacific. River birches allow for privacy during the summer, along with hydrangeas, roses, and geraniums for scent and seasonal colors.
This garden's estimated size is 30 × 30 feet.
