My Gardens of Serenity
Ashford, CT
We were NEVER going to have gardens. We built our geothermal home in 2003 and rationalized that since we lived 600 feet off the road in the woods, and mostly because of the deer, nobody would even notice our blank canvas. Little did we know and through circumstances beyond our control, we now have massive gardens that have become our daily joy. We live on 5 acres in the woods. There are beautiful stone walls that surround our property that were built decades ago to hold pens for livestock. Together, we added a stone wall with two arbors across the front of the house. Between the house and the rock wall, there are raised beds and steps made of stone. All the rocks were harvested from our woods and carried by hand or wheelbarrow. Certainly, a labor of love. There are flowers that bloom from early spring (peonies, poppies, and bulbs) to late fall (canna lilies, dahlias, and purple salvia) which provide vivid colors throughout the yard. There is also a large organic garden and blueberries and figs that provide a year-round bounty. An arbor from the driveway leads to a cozy setting in the backyard where a 20 × 24 patio and gardens were created with our love of the Italian countryside in mind. There are multiple seating areas, surrounded by our stately houseplants, and beautiful blue ceramic pots with flowering annuals. The gardens and patio are a welcoming site for all types of birds and bees, enjoying all that summer has to offer. It is common to have hummingbirds buzzing around throughout the day, and mother birds going to feed their young in the many bird nests around the patio. We have chosen July to give our tours because our gardens are at their most vibrant colors, with the widest number of annuals and perennials in full bloom, and our vegetable gardens, their most productive. We look forward to sharing it all with you.
