Longridge
Sherman Oaks, CA
The front garden of this 1940s-built traditional home is dominated by an ancient and rarely-seen-in-Southern California silver maple tree (Acer saccharinum). Working with the tree and creating new gardens around and under it was the task presented to landscape architect Joseph Marek in 2020. The plantings in this white picket–fenced front garden reflect a more East Coast aesthetic while also considering the need for water-wise plantings. Westringias, teucriums, and Little Ollies have been mixed with hydrangeas, pittosporums, and climbing roses. New 'Natchez White' crape myrtles and boxwood spheres line the sides of the path to the front door. The lawn was reduced in size while still allowing space for the family's young children to play. In time the lawn will be further reduced as the gardens and children grow. The back garden terrace was expanded and now features a roaring firepit, a grill, and a dining pergola for outdoor entertaining and family events. There is also a sliver of lawn for play. A play court and a trampoline currently flank the sides of the pool, but there are plans to build a pool house and to expand the pool down the line.
This garden's estimated size is 10,000 sq. feet.
