Inwood Cottage Garden
Fairfield, CT
Water feature, Woodland/shade garden
The property is 1¼ acres and offers various soil and light conditions, including sun, dry shade, wetlands, and full shade. Old-growth trees define the garden's perimeter. We use native plant material, including perennials, evergreens, and deciduous plants, to add seasonal variety and texture. We focus on winter-hardy plant material and use boxwood, yews, azaleas, and rhododendrons for the foundation and perimeter plantings. We have added dogwood, Eastern red cedar, and river birch for the tree midstory. We have an allée of beauty bush and enjoy the aroma of the harlequin glorybower. We have a significant bulb collection, starting early with snowdrops, crocus, daffodils, and some wetland-loving bulbs. We have a pergola with a wisteria and enjoy climbing hydrangeas on tree trunks and our three-story stone chimney. We refer to that as our "bird hotel." We love native understory plantings, including fern and mayapple, and have used liriope in mass plantings. Summertime is lush with daylily and hydrangea, and we have a full pollinator garden including Joe Pye weed, butterfly weed, mallow, and sedum. The season comes to a close with Montauk daisy and aster. We have a natural pond where fish, frogs, and turtles are at home.
This garden's estimated size is 1¼ acres.
