Hollows End
Gilsum, NH
Alpine/rock garden, Meadow, Organic/toxin-free, Scenic view, Substantial native plants, Water feature, Woodland/shade garden
Surrounded by forested hills and an abundant watershed, Hollows End sits in a few acres of rolling open meadows. The recent aim of garden additions and renovations has been to better connect the house, which sits up on a rise, with the land, and vice versa. A large sky frame that steps out and down over a terrace and deck helps that, along with plantings of native species and cultivars along with grasses. Rustic locust fences surround a barn field/dog run out front and create a backdrop for a lush border in the backyard. An old pond now sits empty, sometimes brought back by beavers and at other times, washed away by super storms. We have finally decided to embrace the comings and goings of nature, but a large flat gazing rock is planned to allow a closer view "down in the bowl." A post and beam Summer House sits at the edge of the old pond; it's lily pond and berm plantings and will be under renovation next. A grotto featuring stone from the property awaits its next phases too, partially completed: a bog, natural stone fountain, and dipping pool. I've learned so much by going to other people's gardens, and it's time to return the favor. While not everything is "finished" here, it's hoped that seeing some things still in process might be beneficial and even exciting.
This garden's estimated size is 1 acre.
