A Garden for Birds
Piedmont, CA

This garden is also hosting a Digging Deeper on Sunday, May 5: Designing a Garden for Pollinators
Although I’ve designed gardens since 1989, it took the enforced isolation of the COVID epidemic to turn my attention to my own property.
After learning of the catastrophic loss of birds, due partly to habitat loss, I determined to create a garden for birds and the insects that support them. Out went the two sloping lawns in the front and back, and in went curved terraces containing some 100 species of California native plants supported by dry-laid stone walls. Flagstone paths wander through the fragrant sunny garden below the coast live oak and continue through the cool, shady garden anchored by a coastal redwood.
Several seating areas offer places to rest and enjoy the 47 species of birds that visit the little pond/waterfall or the front garden fountain so popular with hummingbirds.
This garden’s estimated size is ¼ acre.
