Evelyn's Garden

Montclair, NJ

The Garden Conservancy Preservation Partner Garden

About

Our garden is on 1-1/2 acres of flat land in the Estate Section of Montclair. We moved into this house almost 13 years ago and, while the house was lovely, the garden can be best described as a bramble of overgrown shrubs, badly organized perennials, and ivy in all the beds, on all the brick walls, just everywhere. The original house was built in 1893 and added onto in 1998, so it is a mix of old and new. I spent the whole first year pruning, moving, and ridding the property of ivy. There is a pool surrounded by original brick walls, a tennis court, and a caretaker’s cottage with its own small private garden. There is a small water feature in the back of the property, a pergola original to the house, and a grape arbor with some very old vines. It is a definite retreat for our family and friends.

This garden's estimated size is 1½ acres.
