Dragon's Lair - The Demianew Gardens
Bainbridge Island, WA
About
We are situated on a hill overlooking beautiful Puget Sound. Our property includes both shady woodland and full sun areas, so we are able to grow a diverse selection of landscape plants as well as fruits and vegetables. We have set two main goals for ourselves as caretakers of our property. One is to have something we love in bloom from early spring through fall. The other is to use water and our labor resources efficiently. In addition, we love fragrance and color. We have used many different types of plants throughout our gardens to achieve these goals. We also have many garden accents made of glass that create whimsy and add a pop of color year round. In spring we have a profusion of bulbs and early blooming perennials such as Epimediums and terrestrial orchids. As summer arrives, we have blue Himalayan poppies, more orchids, peonies, Delphiniums, and finally roses and lilies. Fall gives us perennial lobelia, sedum, and many fuchsias. A collection of arisaema blooms throughout the season in the various beds. Our gardens have evolved over the 30+ years we have been here. As we age, we are replacing some more demanding plants with specimen conifers that will mature into unique shapes and create a nice tapestry over the coming years. Grasses add texture as well as low water requirements. We also have two mature ponds that give us many hours of viewing pleasure. Beautiful waterlilies give us color and habitat for many goldfish and frogs that hatch out and mature each year.
This garden’s estimated size is .75 acres cultivated, .75 acres forest.
