The Garden Conservancy Preservation Partner Garden

About

I suppose one could call my garden a cottage garden, although, aside from the two apple trees, the only edibles (two figs in pots) are snacks for squirrels. When this garden came into my life, in addition to the two apple trees, it contained a Norway maple, a ginkgo, a weeping cedar, and a tree fern (Australian). Being a native of the High Plains where every tree ought to be venerated, I got rid of none of them and planted more, including 3 more tree ferns (Tasmanian), a palm, and a papaya. Did I mention this is a small, terraced garden between two apartment buildings? Ergo, a shady garden, and the understory is a collection of plants that are happy in partial or complete shade, such as camellias, begonias, and lots of ferns. A bit of a jungle is the result, lush and atmospheric, with no sign of formality. Few of the plants could be called "rare" or "unusual" (the palm might be the exception--of course I have lost its name.) The garden is below street level so feels a bit like being in the country in the midst of the urban welter.

This garden's estimated size is 1,000 sq. ft.
